Desiderata (meaning that which is wanted or needed) is a trite piece of twentieth century “mass consumption spin”, which is still erroneously believed to have been written in the 17th century. It was performed one night at Poetry & Pints. It served to trigger the following response:
Desperandum
A Council of Despair. (Not yet found in any church that I know of.)
Tread warily through the quagmire and the minefields of existence.
Remember peace is illusory, man is born unto trouble as the sparks fly upwards.
Keep your own council, nobody’s listening anyway.
Harken unto others, it is just possible you may, occasionally, learn something.
No doubt a few people do strive for high ideals.
Many more however, in positions of power and authority, believe themselves to be above moral rectitude.
These defile and prostitute their office for malicious personal gratification or sordid worldly gain. Firm in the belief that good faith has no application when dealing with those whom they regard as socially inferior and /or defenceless.
Throughout history Moral Bankrupts have cynically sought the association of an established Church. A regular appearance in the pews, or indeed the pulpit, is in it self, small and uncertain recommendation.
Take no-one at face value, very few wish you to see them for who, or in fact what, they truly are.
Predatory instincts prevail through out the human species, show no weakness.
Be prepared to defend yourself, your family or your rights; at all times.
Assiduously avoid all unnecessary recourse to the legal profession.
Civil law was never intended to benefit any but the Wealthy, the Lawyer or The Powers That Be.
Participation in organised factions, leads inevitably to the ‘gang mentality’.
However holding your self aloof will tend to identify you as a potential victim.
Membership of an institution or secret society does not however confer immunity.
A pack can turn and rend its own with malevolent ferocity.
In this life you may very well find yourself damned if you do and damned if you don’t
Bullying, cowardice and jealousy are endemic to the Human condition.
You will encounter many who will regard it as both duty and privilege to bind you to an existence of penury, drudgery and unfulfilled dreams.
Just because you are paranoid, does not mean the bastards aren’t out to get you.
No matter how cynical or disillusioned you may become, cling tenaciously to the fading belief that there may yet be a God. This remains your last, best hope that many arrogant, supercilious, covetous, ruthless and unscrupulous people will receive some form of retribution.
Unless of course, like so many before you, you feel compelled to take matters into your own hands.
David Kelly
Desiderata
Go placidly amid the noise and haste and remember what peace there may be in silence.
As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly, and listen to others, even the dull and ignorant; they too have their story.
Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit.
If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for
always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.
Keep interested in your own career, however humble,
it is a real possession, in the changing fortunes of time.
Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is.
Many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism.
Be yourself .
Especially, do not feign affection, neither be cynical about love;
For in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is as perennial as the grass.
Take kindly the council of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.
Beyond a wholesome discipline be gentle with yourself.
You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars.
You have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt, the universe is unfolding as it should.
Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be.
and whatever your labours and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life
keep peace with your soul.
With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world.
Be careful.
Strive to be happy.
